Ad 2) DSB X, 360: "Pasteur unexpectedly achieved the transformation (of tartaris into racemic acid) in May 1853 by heating cinchonine tartrate....In the memoir (1 Aug.1853) in which he announced these two discoveries, Pasteur disclosed a new method for separating racemic acid into its left- and right-handed components. Although introduced by Pasteur only for the case of racemic acid, this new method clearly had wider applicability and was soon used to separate the left- and right-handed components in other 'racemic substances', Darmstädter. 543: The discovery of Chinicin was announced earlier in 1853 and is fully elaborated upon here. Both papers here offered belong to a series of important research papers focussing on the asymmetry of molecules. Ad 1) DSB vol. II, pp. 63-72: Berthelot's most important contribution in his work on Glycerin was to introduce the concept (and name) of polyatomic alcohols, but hardly less important was his synthesis of stearin and palmitin, the chief constituents or ordinary hard fats.': Partington IV, pp. 474 - 477:
